Understanding Worship: Worshipping in Spirit

John 4:23-24 NKJV
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Have you ever done something but yet your heart is not in it? Basically you were just going through the motions and the focus was to just ensure that the thing was done so that you could tick the box and say “DONE!”? All of us have been there and done that. When it comes to worship, God says he does not accept that kind of worship.
Jesus told the Samaritan woman that the hour is here where God is looking for those who will worship him in Spirit and Truth. But what does it mean to worship in Spirit and truth? Think about it this way, human beings are tri part beings. We are a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body. This means that our spirit is the real us while the body is just the house or casing we live in to be able to operate on earth. We are spirit because we came from God and as the verse says, God is Spirit. When we get born again, our spirits are renewed and we receive the Holy Spirit
Just the same way you can be involved in something yet your heart is not in it, many times we say we are worshipping but our hearts are not in it or our hearts are far away from God. Like Jesus said;
Matthew 15:8-9 NKJV
8 ‘These people [a]draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
When you say you are worshipping God, are you present or is your body just going through the motions of clapping and singing and jumping and all the other things we do when we worship?
The Holy Spirit in us helps us to worship but we need to cultivate a relationship and have fellowship with Him.
Have you ever gone through the motions of worship and your heart is not in it? What were the results?
How does the Holy Spirit help you to worship in spirit?
Man looks at the outside while God looks at the heart. What does this means in the context of worship?
